PairDraw

by Joshua Kerievsky

Two years ago, I was immersed in the creation of my company's eXtreme Programming Workshop. I needed an innovative way to thoroughly teach this subject. I stumbled on the answer at a NASAGA (North American Simulation And Gaming Association) conference. I was participating in a simple activity called "QuickDraw", in which two people draw a face together, one line at a time. Magic markers in hand, we drew -- very fast, one line at a time -- until we had co-created one face and then another and another. It was great collaborative fun.

How would I use QuickDraw?

One of the most important practices in eXtreme Programming (XP) is pair programming, in which two programmers work together at one machine to co-develop quality software. QuickDraw would be a perfect way to simulate pair programming! And since many programmers are content to go at it alone in a solitary cubicle, this simulation would be a great way to introduce them to the benefits of pairing.

I call this improv-based simulation PairDraw (recently documented here). I hope that others involved in XP can also use PairDraw to introduce pair programming.
